Thomas Bernard Brown is 72, has been diagnosed with the early stages of dementia, and is currently serving a 3 year prison term for forgetting to register as a sex offender in Marion County, after 10 years of diligently complying with registration requirements in the county. Sex offenders are sentenced to lifetime registration in Florida and as the elderly sex offender population continues to grow, the problems with these policies are highlighted. Many nursing homes will not accept elderly sex, but even if they would, many are not compatible with Florida’s strict residency restrictions. These problems will only get worse as this population continues to grow.
