Lester Gerard Packingham was convicted of maintaining a social media profile as a sex offender in North Carolina. North Carolina does not allow sex offenders to maintain social media profiles at sites that extend membership to minors. In 2012, Packingham appealed his conviction, claiming the law was unconstitutional and violated First Amendment rights. The North Carolina Court of Appeals unanimously agreed with him, but the State Supreme Court upheld the conviction. Now this case is going to the United States Supreme Court.
